Public Education Campaign to Encourage Haitian Immigrant to get the COVID Vaccine

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Before COVID-19, immigrants in these marginalized communities already had to navigate a host of systemic barriers in their day-to-day lives, including low-wage work, language barriers and, for undocumented immigrants, the looming threat of deportation. When the pandemic hit, these social and economic preexisting conditions created "a perfect storm for vulnerability.

As the federal government is sparing no effort to ensure Americans can get vaccinated quickly, effectively, and equitably. Action for Haiti Community Development plan to execute an aggressive Public Education Campaigns to encourage Haitian community immigrants to get the covid vaccine.

The overall Purpose and objective of the Project are:

  • Increase public confidence in COVID-19 vaccines while reinforcing basic prevention measures, including mask wearing and social distancing in greater Boston's immigrant communities.
  • Mount a safe, effective, and comprehensive vaccination campaign to encourage Haitian immigrant communities to get covid vaccine.
  • Encourage immigrants to seek the vaccine regardless of their status.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Massachusetts is home to the third-largest community of Haitian immigrants in America. Haitian immigration has continued to shape the state in recent years, including an influx of refugees after the 2010 earthquake. The COVID‑19 crisis is likely to have a disproportionate impact on immigrant communities. The COVID-19 pandemic in Massachusetts is part of an ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The first confirmed case was reported on February 1, 2020, and the number of cases began increasing rapidly on March 5. Governor Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency on March 10. By March 12, more than a hundred people had tested positive for the virus.

Action for Haiti Community Development, Inc. will lead world-class public education campaigns — covering topics like masking, testing, vaccinations, and vaccine hesitancy — designed with diversity and inclusivity in mind, including communications in Haitian language, to maximize reach and effectiveness. The campaigns will be coordinated, across state, and local levels, and engaged with state, and local government, private and public sector, and community leaders. Our education campaign strategy will be driven by public health experts who will regularly speak directly to the beneficiaries in their own language.

We are committed to making information available in French and Haitian Kreyol languages, through multiple methods, and on an ongoing basis. Our goal is to help our residents make informed decisions, because the COVID-19 vaccine is an important tool to keep ourselves and our communities safe.
